Pitchy Breath aims to nurture new writing talent and tell stories in innovative, provocative and fearless ways. Our theme is limitless possibility, putting experimentation at the centre of our process to gain fresh perspectives on old themes and inspire new thinking around stories yet untold.

Company ethos
When you become involved in a Pitchy Breath production, you don’t just perform, direct or work backstage – you become part of a team. We all support the production and company to ensure it is a success, from encouraging friends to get tickets to our show through to helping one another backstage with moving props and set. Pitchy Breath is a community, a collection of people with one aim – to work together creatively to produce the best theatre we can.

In return, we will provide you with a place to experiment with new ideas, develop your existing skills and introduce you to new ones. We’ll strive to get the best out of you and work with you to reach your full potential.

Q: Who are Pitchy Breath?
 A: Pitchy Breath is a theatre company formed in 1995 as part of Crawley Borough Council’s Community Theatre initiative and have grown to be a significant creative force in non-professional theatre in the region.

 A: Curious minds and creative thinkers.

   Q: What do Pitchy Breath do?
 A: We perform new pieces by usually unpublished playwrights.
 A: We nurture and support writers in the writing process.
 A: We perform in odd spaces as well conventional theatres.
 A: We tell amazing stories unrestricted by convention, space or time.

   Q: Can I join Pitchy Breath?
 A: Pitchy Breath is not a theatre club in the traditional “membership” sense. We encourage curious minds to join us in whatever capacity they want for as long as they want. From scriptwriters through to actors, sound designers, lighting technicians, puppeteers, stage management – anyone who has a desire to be involved with exciting, ambitious and high quality theatre should be talking to us.

   Q: What makes Pitchy Breath different?
 A: Tough one to answer but essentially we aim to produce fearless theatre. This means we are not bound by restriction. If we do not possess the skill to realise a vision, we get it and discover it together. If we hit obstacles based on time, space or concept we work around them or play with them to our advantage. Our philosophy is based around “what would need to be true to tell this story”.

   Q: What is Pitchy Breath’s programme?
 A: We aim to perform at least two productions throughout the year. Venues depend on the nature and scope of the production but typically include ‘black box’ studio theatres, pub theatres and public spaces.

   Q: I have an idea for a play that’s not written, can Pitchy Breath help?
 A: Absolutely, we’d love to! Pitchy Breath aims to nurture new writing talent. Check out our Writers Lab for more information or email scripts@pitchybreath.co.uk for consideration.

   Q: I’m new to acting, can I be part of the Pitchy Breath team?
 A: We’re always on the lookout for new talent and hold auditions for new plays. Occasionally we pre-cast a show by invitation or run a combination of the two.

   Q: Does Pitchy Breath have a “house style”?
 A: No, we are limitless. You are as likely to see a stag do in space as you are a musical about mud. Our theme is limitless possibility.
